NADMO Issues Armyworm Advisory for Upper East and Upper West Regions

NADMO's Pest and Insect Infestation Department has issued an advisory to farming communities in the Upper East and Upper West regions following confirmed reports of fall armyworm outbreaks.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) Pest and Insect Infestation Department has issued an urgent advisory to farming communities in the Upper East and Upper West regions following confirmed outbreaks of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) affecting maize crops across multiple districts.

Field officers have recorded infestations in Bolgatanga, Bongo, Kassena-Nankana, Wa East, and Sissala districts. The pest, which feeds on crops overnight and can devastate entire fields within days, poses a significant threat to food security ahead of the harvest season.

NADMO is coordinating with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana to deploy response teams and facilitate access to approved pesticides for affected farmers.

Advisory to farmers:

  • Inspect crops — particularly maize — daily for signs of leaf damage, frass (droppings), and larvae in the central whorl of plants.
  • Report sightings immediately to your District NADMO office or the nearest MoFA extension officer.
  • Do not apply unapproved chemicals; await guidance from agriculture officers on certified treatments.
  • Practice early morning or late evening scouting when armyworms are most active.

Farmers requiring assistance should contact NADMO's Upper East Regional Office on 038-2022341 or call the national hotline on 0800-11-3000.
